Kaywoodie pipes stamped with "Matched Grain" were cased (2, 4, 5, or 7 pipes). Some ads seem to attest to 12 and even 28 pipes cased sets. Whenever you have an individual pipe stamped "Matched Grain Kaywoodie" you know you are dealing with a pipe that was originally within a set.

The pipes of these sets were selected for the perfection of the briar and were assembled as to their graining in the way "pearls of a string are matched" (according to Kaywoodie).
