Created about 1802, Courrieu certainly is the oldest french briar pipe factory.

 

According to Wilczak & Colwell, op. cit. this brand could be either from Hudson Universal (USA) or from W. J. Palmer & Co (England)

The Falcon Pipe is an American invention, patented by Kenley Bugg of Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1936. In 1963, the production moved to the plant of Merton and Falcon Co in Britain.

Artisan: Jean Masson (b. 1934). Not yet retired (2009), he has nevertheless slowed down his production which used to reach 250 carved pipes (Voltaire, Lenine, Kennedy...) and 1000 clasical pipes per year. Inventor of the patented "Anti-jus" (anti gunk) system.

Merlin was a brand of the Oppenheimer group. The meerschaum pipes were produced in association with Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation from Amboseli Pipes. (J.M. Lopes, op. cit.)

In 1934 Joseph St. John opened on Wall Street (New Haven CT) a shop selling tobacco and books. In 1946 St. John and his brother-in-law George Photakis established the Owl Shop on 416 Main St in Worcester, Mass.
Son John Photakis († 2003) entered the family business in the late 1970s and used to carve pipes to be sold in the shop.
