▲ This Royal Ascot
with a horseshoe logo doesn't seem to be of French descent but of English
origin.
Pipes with this brand were manufactured in France for
Duncan (according
to J.M. Lopes,
op. cit. and Wilczak & Colwell,
op.
cit.). They were destined to US market and sold by
Mastercraft.

Wilczak & Colwell (
op.

seems in contradiction with the "Made in Belgium" stamping on
this pipe.

Both the logo on the stem and the "Popular" stamping
on the right side of the shank allow to attribute this label to Duncan.

Artisan: Brian Ruthenberg started to carve pipes in
2001 on part time. In 2005 he went fulltime at making high grade pipes.
Until Oct 2002 pipes are stamped "BAR" (carver's initials).
Early grading (canceled in 2002) (ascending): 04, 03, 02, 01, 00. Semi-rusticated
and rusticated were stamped R1 and R2.
From 2002 on the identification became "RUTHENBERG" (arched)
over "USA" over "HANDMADE" (straight)
The pipes are year dated: 03 = 2003
"Caliper" (or compass) grade: exceptional
pipes with perfectly centered straight grain or regular ring grain.
Pipes marked with an "F" (Flawed/Filled) are not to be sold.
They are gifts or smoked by the artisan himself.
